The British Association for Human Identification are proud to present to you our next speaker in the BAHID Webinar Series, Cheryl Allsop, who will be discussing the importance of Multi-Discplinary research in assising in the investigation of cold cases.

Putting interdisciplinary research into practice: student volunteers and the cold case unit 

Abstract

The USW Cold Case Unit was developed as a practical way for students from different disciplines, community volunteers and investigative experts to work together on cold case investigations. The unit works on long-term missing people, unsolved murders and unidentified found remains, both national and international cases. The ethos of the project is to help the families and victims in cold cases where otherwise they may not get the focused investigative help they need.  During this talk you will hear about how the unit works in practice, the cases’ students work on and the opportunities and challenges this work presents.

Speaker Biography

 Dr Cheryl Allsop is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Criminal Justice and leads the USW Cold Case Unit and miscarriages of justice project. She is the author of Cold case reviews: DNA, detective work and unsolved major crimes published by Oxford University Press and is currently co-editing a new International Handbook of Homicide Investigations. She currently teaches on a variety of applied crime and justice modules linked to her research on major crime investigations, missing people and cold cases. She is currently working on a Home Office funded project looking at commonalties, characteristics and vulnerabilities on cases of missing people considered murdered to assist frontline officers in identifying potential harms when a person is reported missing. A second project in conjunction with Swansea University looking at Welsh police responses to vulnerability and sex work and a third project again funded by the Home Office evaluating offensive weapon homicide reviews. Dr Allsop is a Trustee of Locate International a charity dedicated to helping families locate missing people, an academic member of the National Missing People Expert Reference Group and an independent member of the MPS Inactive Case Scrutiny Panel
