Dr Kate Barnes

Forensic Entomology: The Fly Detectives

Flies might not witness a murder but they can provide temporal, spatial and sometimes causal information about the death. This talk will take you through a fly's journey of finding, colonising and developing on a dead body and the information they can provide to a forensic entomologist.

Dr Kate Barnes is a Senior Lecturer in Forensic Biology at the University of Derby. Her research is focused on the areas of forensic entomology and taphonomy and centres around using insects in minimum time since death estimations. She is currently exploring how the environment influences blowfly activity and oviposition with a view to better understanding the pre-colonisation period and more accurately determining species-specific colonisation times and the effect of habitat and deposition scenarios on insect succession.

This webinar is free to attend for all. Please register at the following link: Webinar Series 2025: Kate Barnes

Registration closes on Tuesday 25th February with the links sent out for the Zoom Meeting Room the morning of the webinar.

Dr Hebe Unwin

Forensic Smile Analysis: Can selfies be used to identify a person, in lieu of standard antemortem odontological data?

Join us for an insightful webinar on the accuracy and accessibility of smile photography analysis in aiding human identification, presented by Hebe R. Unwin, an Associate Lecturer in Forensic Investigation at Plymouth Marjon University, specialising in Forensic Anthropology. We will discuss it’s past, real-world applications at present, and future in aiding investigations, especially in cases of Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) and migrant DVI. Learn about the potential of smile photography analysis to provide cost-effective, non-invasive, and globally applicable solutions for identifying individuals when traditional methods fall short and discuss where Hebe’s research may lead next.

This webinar is free to attend for all. Please register at the following link: Webinar Series 2025: Hebe Unwin
